ERUDITA Podcast Series

Some stories still matter. A meta-story overview of what the six Didactic Units are about, and how they handle ethical and moral issues, for anyone meeting the series for the first time.

The ERUDITA Podcast series is a set of six short, direct-address video pieces (DU_00 through DU_05) that sit alongside the ERUDITA game's own vertical episodes. Where the game's episodes exist to show how the REBOOT platform works, as the interaction between a human player and a virtual character, the Podcast series exists to give ERUDITA's ethical questions, cultural heritage, truth, institutional silence, a format of their own: shorter, more intimate, and built to end on a question rather than an answer.

All six units share one origin image. For generations, women in and around Peniche wove denunciation information, names, dates, connections, into bobbin lace patterns commissioned by the Esteves Foundation, without knowing that was what the patterns meant. The lace itself never lied, and it never told the truth on purpose either. It encoded exactly what it was told to encode, and the women who made it were fully skilled, fully present at their work, and fully unaware of what their own hands were producing.

That single image is not decorative. It is the engine behind every dilemma the series poses: skill and wrongdoing turn out to be separable, and nobody across the six units gets to close that gap cleanly. Someone can do real harm with no guilty knowledge at all, and that fact does not cancel the harm, nor does it convict the person who caused it.

The six units, in one line each

A nation, a friendship, an institution, a town, a family

Read in order, the six units move the same question through steadily smaller and more personal frames. The scale changes; the underlying dilemma, what do you do with a truth someone else's hands built without meaning to, does not.

Prologue, threshold before the story

The Guardian of the Archive

Not part of the story itself. A single character tells the player, before any plot begins, that finding out what the cipher means will cost them something. It is the series stating its own terms up front.

The Reception

The choice at institutional scale. Francisco Esteves, Captain Costa, and Dra. Catarina Vas debate what a nation does with an uncomfortable truth about its own heritage, closing on Esteves asking the audience directly whether "reveal it or protect it" is even the right way to frame the decision.

The Price of Silence

The choice dropped to personal scale for the first time. Marta finds her own father's name on a Foundation certificate and has to decide, with her friend Sofia pushing her, whether looking further would unmake her own family. Tomas appears here doing exactly what DU_03 later shows him becoming: quietly trying to close the subject down.

The Unraveling

The origin of that instinct. Francisco Esteves recruits Tomas to become the game's hidden saboteur, in exchange for a museum directorship. This is the one unit where institutional self-interest is not just present in the background, it is shown actively manufacturing someone else's complicity, in real time, on screen.

Not Too Late

The shift from complicity to bystanding. Rui watched something happen at the harbour and said nothing for twelve years. Vania, the town's telephone operator and normally a hidden background character, turns out to have carried her own twelve years of half-heard evidence. The dilemma here is not whether the truth comes out, a note guarantees that it will, it is whether speaking once actually changes a habit of silence, or whether the habit simply reasserts itself.

The Trade-Off My Mother Made

The season closes at the smallest and hardest scale, inside a single family. Isabel and Ines each hold a different piece of the same discovery, because the person who may be implicated is Isabel's own mother, and the man who paid for it, her uncle Joaquim, is real to both of them in different ways.

How the series handles ethics

Never the same tool twice

The moral frameworks are not interchangeable dressing. They are chosen deliberately per unit, and no unit lets either side simply win the argument.

DU_01 and DU_03 both run a reveal-or-protect dilemma at institutional scale, but DU_03 sharpens it: Francisco's own habit of "handling it legally" becomes the thing the closing question is aimed at, "Legitimate, or just legal?", a question pointed at him specifically, not thrown open to the audience.

DU_04 is built on documented bystander-effect psychology, diffusion of responsibility, the habit of telling yourself a thing is a coincidence, not invented behavior. That grounding is why its real question is not "will he finally speak," a note in the story already guarantees that, but whether speaking once actually rewires twelve years of avoidance, or whether the avoidance simply returns the next time it costs something.

DU_05 runs a more philosophical pairing: moral luck against culpability (does the outcome matter regardless of what someone knew, or does responsibility require knowing?), layered under care ethics against justice ethics (protecting a relationship and a mother's memory, against protecting a dead man's claim on the truth). Isabel and Ines each hold one side of both pairings, and the script never lets either position collapse under the other's pressure.

The closing device

Three answers, on purpose

Every unit ends by handing its dilemma somewhere, but not to the same place twice, and that variation is itself a design choice.

DU_01 · DU_05

"You choose"

Belongs to the viewer, because those two dilemmas genuinely belong to whoever is watching.

DU_04

"Sit with that"

Deliberately breaks the pattern, because Rui's dilemma is his own to carry, not the audience's to resolve on his behalf.

DU_03

Silence, and a question for him

Closes on two lace bobbins and a question aimed squarely at Francisco, because the conscience missing from that scene belongs to the uncatalogued woman neither man ever pictures while making their deal.

Three different answers to one structural question, whose dilemma is this, really, and the series treats that answer as something that changes person to person rather than something to standardize into one repeated tagline.

What it's teaching

The same lesson, told twice

The narrative layer is moral reasoning without resolution. ERUDITA never hands the player or the viewer a verdict; it hands them the honest shape of a hard choice and stops there, on purpose, because a resolved dilemma stops being a dilemma and becomes a lesson.

The production layer says the same thing about the tool that made the videos. Every Didactic Unit carries the identical closing essay, "AI does not eliminate expertise. It makes expertise visible," and every unit documents its own credits spent, its own reshoots, its own lighting mistakes, alongside the story itself. A cipher that encodes real consequences without announcing what it means is, quietly, a description of what generative AI does too. Logging the production honestly, rather than letting the finished clip look effortless, is the project refusing to let the tool look like magic, in the same way the story refuses to let the lace look innocent.

Competence never arrives with its ethics already attached.

Put together, an unresolved human dilemma sitting in the same document as an honestly logged production record, is the through-line of the whole series. Whether it belongs to a lacemaker's hands or to an AI model's output, someone still has to decide what to do with what it produces, on screen and off it.
