Ideas and Opportunities

Abstract

Following the theoretical basis set in Module 2, this 20-hour 5-unit module focuses on the European Entrepreneurship Competence Framework and examines its application in the museum sector. The Module focuses on 2 competence areas of the framework, “Ideas and Opportunities” and “In Action” and attempts to examine each competence through case studies from the European museum context with further references to museums of the world. The aim of the module is to provide a holistic understanding of key aspects of museum sustainability and their connection to entrepreneurial aspects of museum management and planning. To this end, the module explores the EntreComp Framework and its application in museums (unit 1), offers a comprehensive examination of issues of sustainability and value creation (unit 2), addresses innovation and creativity in the museum entrepreneurial environment (unit 3), discusses the importance of strategic planning for risk and uncertainty (unit 4) and sums it all up in a comprehensive recap session (unit 5).

unit_1: The EntreComp Framework and Museum Visions

Abstract

This introductory 4-hour unit focuses on the discussion of the EntreComp Framework and its application in museum contexts. It aims to examine the importance of introducing entrepreneurial capacities in the management of museums and how this translates into the everyday operations and activities of museums. The Unit also offers a holistic understanding of the role of museum visions and their connection to entrepreneurial activities.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of unit 1, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the EntreComp Framework
  • Elaborate on entrepreneurial competencies necessary in museum management
  • Examine the potential of entrepreneurial activities for museum sustainability
  • Elaborate on how entrepreneurial activities can address the priorities set by a museum’s vision
  • Examine the future museum challenges and their connection to entrepreneurial activities
  • Argue on the above points via posts and comments on each other’s work.

Watch resource nº 2 (2 minutes), resource nº 3 (4 minutes) and read resource nº 1.

Take notes with the key points in mind and choose the 3 most important competences (as described in EntreComp) for the museum sector, according to your opinion.

2. Museum Entrepreneurship 
Read resource nº 4 and resource nº5 and watch resource 6.

Go online and choose your nearest museum, or a museum of your choice in your country. 

Go to their website and scan through their news/recent activities. Select three of them that have a distinct entrepreneurial aspect. Think if these activities could be further enhanced and how. Is there anything you would have done differently?

3. Museum Visions and Entrepreneurial Activities
Watch resource nº 7 and read resource nº8 describing the concepts of museums’ mission and vision.

Read resource nº9 and take notes on the key challenges identified by the survey.

Go back to the website of the museum you chose in Activity 2 and locate its vision. Based on its vision, and on the challenges described in resource nº9, think of entrepreneurial activities that the museum should incorporate in the coming years to address its vision and the challenges of the sector.

unit_2: Planning for Sustainability and Value Creation

Abstract

This 4-hour unit focuses on the examination of Values and Sustainability, which relate to important competences of the EntreComp Framework, in the Area of Ideas and Opportunities. Through hands-on exercises and case studies from the European and International context, the unit aims to examine the social, cultural and economic value of museums, and their relation to the sustainability of the museum sector. By examining particular case studies, focusing on areas of social and environmental action, the Unit allows for the connection of sustainability goals to specific entrepreneurial potential and activities in museum sector.

By the end of unit 2, learners will be able to:

  • Identify and assess the social, cultural and economic value of museums
  • Understand the concept of sustainable development and the UN Goals for sustainable development
  • Elaborate on the sustainability of museums and the connection between sustainability and entrepreneurial activities

Abstract

This 4-hour unit focuses on the discussion of Innovation and Creativity in museum contexts, which relate to important competences of the EntreComp Framework, in the Area of “Ideas and Opportunities” and “In Action”.
